Chie Aguilar

September 4, 1939 — September 23, 2025

San Antonio, Texas

Chie Teruya Aguilar, 86, of San Antonio, Texas, went to be with the Lord on September 23, 2025, after bravely battling cancer and other illnesses for many years. She was born in Okinawa, Japan on September 4, 1939.

Chie was the second of nine children born to Rinei and Ushi Teruya. She was a survivor of WWII and often told us stories of hiding in caves with her family and others in the community. She also recalls at the age of five boarding a ship with her family sailing to Saipan to escape the ravages of war on Okinawa. She often told us the story of going on deck alone to try to find something for her mom to eat because she was so seasick. She said an American soldier gave her a big red apple and she took it down to her family and they shared it. After receiving that apple from the American soldier she no longer feared them. Life for her and her family was very difficult in Okinawa in the years following the war.

Many years later she met and married an American soldier, George Aguilar, Jr. George was in the Army and stationed on Okinawa while deploying to many areas in the region. They met and were married on August 20, 1965. She left Okinawa in February 1966 to start her new life in America. She improved on her English and taught herself to read and write. After many years of moving wherever the army took them, they came back to San Antonio, Texas to retire.

Chie had many talents and hobbies which included: gardening, floral arranging, Japanese ink art and participating in Okinawan dance and Eisa drum dance. She and her group performed at the Folk Life Festival and at a night River Parade. She was a very talented cook and could make the simplest things taste delicious. If you ever stopped by announced or unannounced she would whip up something delicious to eat. You never left her house hungry. Her faith was very important to her, and she was baptized into the Baptist faith at Lackland Baptist Church and was a very active member of the church. She also attended a Japanese bible study class with her friends so she could better understand it.

Chie will be dearly missed by her family. Chie is survived by her daughter Georgieanna Braud and husband Richard, sons Michael Aguilar, and Mark Aguilar and wife Nicki, grandchildren, Richard Braud Jr., Scott Braud and his wife Jenifer, Austin Aguilar, Emily Aguilar and great grandchildren, Jadynn Braud, Jace Braud and George Braud. She is preceded in death by her husband George Aguilar Jr., daughter Juanita Aguilar, and grandson Michael A. Braud.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Abodehome.org. Abode is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit end-of-life care home in San Antonio offering contemplative care for those in the last three months, weeks or days of life.

We thank the staff of Abode for providing generous, loving, and respectful care to our mother.
