Carol Ann Richie, loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at home on December 20, 2025 at the age of 80.
Carol was born in Washington, DC on August 25, 1941, but grew up in Alexandria, Louisiana. She graduated in 1963 from Bolton High School. On July 4, 1964, she married Rowland Richie from Leighton, Alabama and would spend the next 28 years as an Air Force wife. Her favorite phrase was "Home is where the Air Force sends you." Wherever the family lived, she always made it feel like home.
Carol was a devout Catholic and longtime member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Schertz, Texas. She worked in civil service at Randolph Air Force Base until retiring in 2005.
Carol's favorite times were spent with family, especially her grandchildren. She and Rowland would attend as many of their activities as they could. They brought her so much joy.
Carol also cherished the friendships that she had, not only in Texas, but anywhere that they were stationed.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents Charles D. Patten II and Lucy Patten, and brother Charles D. Patten III (and wife Anne Patten).
Carol is survived by her husband of 61 years, Rowland Richie; Daughter Kathy and son-in-law Jim; Son Michael; Grandchildren Madison Richie and wife Suzie, Dylan Makar and fiancé Blaire, Taylor and wife Loren; Bonus Grandchildren in Denmark Jonas Bruce, Elisabeth Bruce, husband Lennart and great-granddaughters Isabella and Alberte; Sister Patricia Mayeux of Ball, Louisiana; Niece Anne Patten of Dallas, Texas, and her beloved dog, Maggie.
Our Wife, Mom, and Nana was the sweetest person and her presence will be missed. We would like to sincerely thank all the family and friends who brought love and happiness to her life and thank you all for supporting the family through her illness. We also want to recognize the caregivers that provided support and respite to us. A special thanks to Hope Hospice for providing such compassionate care for both her and our family.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2026 beginning at 5 PM at Schertz Funeral Home. The following day, Monday, January 12, 2025, a Funeral Service will be held beginning at 12:30 PM. We will depart in procession to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, where the Graveside Service will begin at 2:15 PM.
