Carlos E. Whatley, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, friend, and proud Air Force veteran, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, at the age of 61, surrounded by his loved ones in San Antonio, Texas.
Born on July 14, 1965, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the beloved son of Betty Whatley and Charles Rice. On November 2, 1984, in Columbus, Ohio, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Kimberly D. Whatley. Their enduring partnership spanned 41 beautiful years, during which they raised three children: Carlos Jr., Charles, and Nikita.
He served honorably in the United States Air Force for 26 years, culminating his distinguished career at the highest enlisted rank of Chief Master Sergeant before retiring in San Antonio, Texas. A highly decorated service member, his legacy of leadership, mentorship, and professional excellence continues to influence the next generation of Airmen.
A devoted Christian, he was a man of unwavering faith, deep integrity, and principled conviction. He stood firmly in his beliefs and was ever ready to offer wise counsel and perspective to those around him. Known for his infectious smile, masterful storytelling, and wry humor, his charismatic and confident presence left an indelible impression on everyone he met. He was loved beyond measure and will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Charles. He is survived by his wife, Kimberly; his children, Carlos Jr. (Severine), Charles (Sidnei), and Nikita; his grandchildren, Carlos III, Cassandra, Brandon, Joshua, and Emi; his siblings, Charles Rice, Phyllis Cameron, Gloria Coleman, and Kristi Spiller; and a host of extended family and friends.
With immense appreciation for the lives he touched, his family will host a Celebration of Life in November 2026. Further details will be shared for anyone who wishes to honor his memory.
