It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bertha Benton Lynch, who departed peacefully from this world on February 15, 2024 after a prolonged battle with breast cancer. She was a beloved mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend to many.
Bert was born on November 9, 1943 in Goldsboro, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Luby “Joe” and Dora Lee Benton. She attended Seven Springs High School where she developed many lifelong friendships. She went on to marry her high school sweetheart, Robert Edward “Bill” Lynch, Jr, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love and joy.
Bert attended secretarial school and worked as a clerk for the telephone company in Goldsboro, NC and the Washington, DC area before she had her first child and became a full time mom. Bill’s career as an engineer in the Civil Service took them to places across the country and even abroad, including Maryland, Illinois, Delaware, and the Azores. They finally settled in San Antonio, TX in 1984. Throughout her husband’s career, Bert remained engaged in the Officer’s Wives Club and Civil Engineering Wives Club and formed many dear friendships through those groups.
Bert was a devoted mother who always put her family first. She was a wonderful homemaker, an excellent country cook famous for her buttermilk biscuits, and a loving caretaker to her husband and children. Her laughter and warm spirit brought joy and comfort to countless people, and many appreciated her soothing and understanding nature.
In her spare time, Bert enjoyed cooking meals for her family, talking on the phone with her family and friends back home in North Carolina, taking annual family vacations, and watching Judge Judy. She was also an active member of Schertz United Methodist Church for nearly four decades, where she dedicated much of her time helping others. She founded several fellowship groups during her time at the church, including her beloved “Round-Tuits”, a weekly meet up for Methodist women to socialize while working on crafts and projects they never get around to at home.
Bert will forever be remembered for her kindness, selflessness, and unwavering love for her family and friends. She touched the hearts of many with her gentle spirit and beautiful smile. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Bert is survived by three children – Darlene Lynch Runkle and husband Bill Runkle of Garden Ridge, Samantha Lynch Kintner of Wichita Falls, and Robert E Lynch III, MD and husband Shiva Tummala of Houston; seven grandchildren – Rachel Runkle Resop and husband Aaron Resop, Marc Runkle, Matthew Runkle, Emily Kintner, Miles Kintner, Molly Kintner, and Steven Kintner; three great grandchildren – Joey Resop, Savannah Resop, and Jack Resop; two sisters – Georgia Thornton of Goldsboro, NC and Betty Ross and husband George of Denver, CO; and a brother, Tommy Benton of Clayton, NC.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert Edward “Bill” Lynch, Jr.; two sisters – Adell Jones and Jo Ann Barfield; and two brothers – Linwood Benton and Donald Benton.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Bert's memory to Schertz United Methodist Church.
