In Loving Memory of Berengela Gonzalez (Wela Betty)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Berengela Gonzalez, lovingly known as Wela Betty, on July 7, 2025, at the age of ninety-five.
Berengela was born on February 22, 1930, in the small town of Cuero, Texas to Tomasa G. Lopez and Basilio Villarreal. She was the proud daughter of migrant workers, and her early life was shaped by resilience, determination, and a deep sense of family life.
She met and married Jose Gonzalez, widowed upon his death, worked to raise six wonderful children, Diana, Jose, Alicia, Patricia, Manuel, and Betty on her own. Although she only had a primary education, she provided the best possible life she could for her children, one rich in family, laughter, and love.
Over the years, she worked to provide for her family as a nurse’s aid for several nursing homes in the San Antonio area. She continued working, assembling airplane parts for General Dynamics Engineering for several years until she retired.
Those who know Berengela will remember her as strong-willed, funny, compassionate, and creative. A devout catholic, she maintained a close and unwavering relationship with God throughout her life. Her faith was the foundation of her strength, and it guided her in all areas of her daily life.
Berengela loved spending time with her family, holidays were her favorite, as we all gathered each year to cook and celebrate in the tiniest of homes. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, painting, baking, and dancing. Over the years she created many beautiful quilts and clothing for her children and extended family. There was not a day in which she was not coloring in one of her lovely coloring books given to her by her loved ones.
Berengela is preceded in death by her mother, Tomasa G. Lopez, her father, Basilio Villarreal, daughters Diana DeHoyos, Alicia DeHoyos and her sons-in-laws, Henry and Rudy DeHoyos.
She is survived by her brother, Jose Lopez, her sons, Jose and wife Heva Gonzalez, Manuel and wife Martina Cedillo, daughters, Patricia and husband Jack Tye, and Betty and husband Ernest Aleman. She leaves behind many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
