Barry Howard Price, Sr.

November 18, 1932 — April 13, 2025

Schertz

Barry “Bud” Howard Price, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the Frank M. Tejada Texas State Veterans Home in Floresville, Texas, following a brief illness.

Bud was born on November 18, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, to Henry and Sara Mae Price. He grew up on the South Side, where he attended high school, sang in the choir, and probably had no idea he’d one day trade snow shovels for Texas sunshine. He studied for a year at the University of Illinois before joining the U.S. Air Force in July 1951.

While stationed at Randolph Air Force Base in Schertz, Texas, Bud met the love of his life, Elizabeth “Beth” Berry Carrey. He liked to say that meeting her was his best assignment. They were married in July 1954 and raised three children: Barry Jr., Elaine, and Martin. Martin passed away at an early age but remains always in the family’s hearts.

Bud was a devoted family man who never passed up a chance to spend time with his wife and kids—especially if it involved bowling, barbecues, or cheering on his beloved Chicago Cubs (he never gave up hope, even during the long, lean decades). The family was actively involved in Jewish communities wherever military life took them.

During his Air Force career, Bud served as a tail gunner on a B-52 reconnaissance crew during the Korean War, later advancing to Technical Sergeant. He specialized in air transportation and logistics—basically, he was the guy who knew how to get people and things from point A to point B efficiently and with minimal grumbling. After Vietnam, he continued his service in passenger support before retiring in 1974, after 23 years.

The family settled permanently in Schertz in 1968, where Beth’s daughter, Debi Carrey, joined the crew. After military life, Bud became a licensed real estate agent. He was also a fan of fishing, hunting, long walks with the dog, golf, and fixing (or sometimes just tinkering with) computers. His favorite spot was the “smoke shack,” where he’d watch sports, chat, troubleshoot Windows updates, and enjoy a snack or two—usually with a side of commentary.

He is survived by his son Barry Jr. and daughter-in-law Cathy; his daughter Elaine Price and her partner Bob Luna; and his stepdaughter Debi Cole. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rebecca Rhoden (Patrick) and Benjamin Price (Victoria); and great-grandchildren Ella Miller, Otto Rhoden, and Peter Price. Additional survivors include his sister, Joan Ress; brother-in-law Clarence Berry and wife Lois; and four nephews who were always fair game for a dad joke.

Bud was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Elizabeth; their son Martin; and his parents.

The graveside service will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., at Pavilion 3. Bud will be interred alongside Elizabeth, his sweetheart, with whom he shared a life full of laughter, love, and (plenty of) sports.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Connally Memorial Hospital and the Frank M. Tejada Texas State Veterans Home for their care and kindness during Bud’s final days. He may have left this world, but his stories—and his stubborn loyalty to the Cubs—will live on.
