Barbara Fortassain Scholze
June 10,1933 - December 9, 2025
Barbara Fortassain Scholze, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went to live for eternity with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 9th. Her life was a beautiful testament to faith, love, and selflessdevotion to others.
Barbara Jean was born on June 10, 1933 in San Antonio, Texas to parents Lawrence Joseph and Mabel Horn Fortassain. She attended Thomas Jefferson High School where she began her life of service joining school organizations including student council, Girls’Cadet Corps, and the Rifle Team.
Also while attending high school, she met her forever love, Karl A. Scholze. They were married on February 7, 1953, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in faith and family that lasted 72 years.
Barbara and Karl made their home in Garden Ridge, Texas in 1969 where they raised their three children: Lisa Scholze Batey (Mike), Larry Scholze (Cheryl), and Lamar Scholze (Sylwia). She was also proud and grateful for her role as “Grammy” to her four grandchildren: Sarah Batey Sierra (JJ), Amy Scholze Uniacke (Eric), Michael Scholze (Shelby), and Julia Scholze, and her six great-grandchildren: Zachary and Nathan Sierra, Madeline and Emma Uniacke, and Bailey and Collins Scholze.
Barbara adored her family, always placing their needs before her own, offering unwavering support, wisdom, and prayer. She took great delight in every moment spent with them - whether in the pool, at the beach, enjoying a mexican food dinner at La Fonda, or proudly watching them participate in sporting events and pursue their talents and hobbies.
Barbara’s faith in God was the foundation of her life. She loved the Lord deeply and lived out her faith through service, generosity and kindness to everyone she encountered. She had a servant’s heart and found joy in caring for others- even in her later-in-life career of a sales assistant at Scrivner’s as well as educating deaf children in the local school district, even driving their bus. But, one of her greatest gifts of service was through cooking. Barbara was an exceptional cook, spending countless hours in her kitchen creating homemade dishes. Her meals brought family and friends together and will forever be remembered as expressions of her love.
We are saddened by her loss but are forever grateful for having been blessed by her love and devotion to her family and the legacy she leaves behind.
Barbara was preceded in death by her mother, father, and sister, Linda Fortassain Mulcahy.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Lori Hickson, Dr. Sheri Boyd, and Connie Costello for the years of care and dedication as well as the most recent care from Northeast Methodist Hospital, PAM Rehabilitation Hospital of New Braunfels, Hope Hospice, and caregivers Debbie Norris, Denise Garcia and most immediate care from Qualicare and Caring Senior Services in New Braunfels.
A Holy Mass will be held for Barbara at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma, Texas on December 30, 2025 at 11:00 and a reception following at the OLPH Pastoral Center.
