Barbara Sackett

July 26, 1932 — February 10, 2021

Barbara Ann Sackett, born in Brooklyn, NY, to Frances and Edward Morris, passed away on February 10, 2021. Barbara and Eugene Sackett were married on January 9, 1954 and although she was one of the first in her extended family to be married, she always felt like she was behind her cousins in having children. Barbara had no need to worry, because in just 5 years, she gave birth to 5 children. She worked as a legal secretary before she had children and returned to this career once her children became more independent. She loved her job and working with attorneys and they all thought she was the best. Barbara was deeply religious and a devout Catholic. She sang and played guitar in her church’s adult folk group, and later became a eucharistic minister. Barbara loved reading, crocheting, needlepoint, jigsaw puzzles, the game of Clue (she always challenged her grandchildren) and any card game. She enjoyed camping and fishing- first with all her children, and then with her husband. Their favorite spot was Montauk Point on Long Island- the blue fish put up quite a fight. Barbara was a born leader. She was a coach of her softball team, president of her senior group, secretary of her HOA community, and frequently planned activities, lunches, or gatherings for any group that she was a member. In addition, family vacations were filled with games for the sake of her children and grandchildren. She did this without any thought as it was her instinct to ensure everyone was involved and had a good time. Barbara loved her cocktails, and you could set your clock to when it was time to have one. Her favorite was white drinks in summer and dark drinks in winter and was always willing to have an extra sip of her husband’s beer. Barbara loved to entertain. Her house was always open to friends and family for any special occasion. She loved to plan traditional parties (St. Patrick’s Day, New Years Eve) and was not afraid to plan something crazy like a Limburger Cheese party for her friends in Florida. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Gene Sackett; her children, Lynda and husband Mike, Eugene and wife Ellen, Bill and wife Mary Anne, Mary and husband Chris, and Lori; 14 grandchildren, Daniel, Erik, Laura, Erin, Alex, Matthew, Michael, Kevin, Christopher, Tyler, Zack, Ali, Christy and Gemma; and 3 great grandchildren, Ellie, Emilia, and Hana. Barbara was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, and someone who you could always count on to be there when you needed her most. Barbara you will be missed! Service will be held Tuesday, February 16, 2021, 2:00pm at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel.
