Arnold Alfred “Fred” Moos, age 85, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026. He was born on September 23, 1940 in a home in New Braunfels, Texas, the only child of Arnold V. and Kathlyn Schertz Moos.
Fred attended Mount Sacred Heart, then graduated from New Braunfels High School in 1959. After 4 years of courtship, Fred married his sweetheart, Angeline Scheel on April 15, 1961 in the original church at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma and are still active parishioners to this day. They have remained living on the same homestead that they first moved onto 65 years ago.
He began working full-time 6 months after graduation at Acme Butane Company, now known as Arnold Moos Company, along side his Dad who founded the company. His sons, Steve and Jim later joined the company. Since his retirement in 2011, Jim has continued the company.
Fred was in the National Guard for 8 years; active member of the Bracken Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Fire Chief for 9 years and Board President for 18 years. He also was Crew Chief for the Bracken Bazaar and Shift Captian for the Kartoffel Puffer Booth at Wurstfest; was a member of the St. Michael’s Society where he cooked for the OLPH Church festival and chicken dinner for many years; enjoyed 9-pin bowling at Cibolo and Bracken Bowling Clubs; served 29 years as a Board Director for Schertz Bank and Trust. His greatest accomplishment was earning his private pilot’s license in 1976, then owning his own Beechcraft Musketeer. Later, upon selling his plane, Fred bought his John Deere 450H Bulldozer and many tractors which cultivated his love for farming. He also enjoyed clearing land, digging tanks, cutting and bailing hay. When he wasn’t farming or bulldozing, he was enjoying his lifelong loves of hunting and fishing with many friends and family.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Angeline Scheel Moos; his sons, Steve Moos (Brenda), Jim Moos (Christine), and daughter Janalyn Moos Alexander (Rick); his grandchildren: Sheldon Moos (Bria), Kyle Moos, Madison Moos, Cory Moos, and Braxton Alexander; his great-grandchildren: Margot Moos and Mia Moos; his in-laws: Bernice Friesenhahn, Alice Dolle, Clarence Scheel, Joyce Scheel, Jeanette Mooney, Gladys Haecker (Ralph), Joan Mayer (Claude), Madelyn Shodrok (James), Debbie Real (Chuck) and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Arnold V. and Kathlyn Schertz Moos; in-laws: Adolph and Mary Schumann Scheel; Grandson: Preston Moos; brother-in-laws: Elton Scheel, Clarence Dolle, Wilbur Friesenhahn, Richard “Whitey” Haecker Jr., J.T.Mooney, and Harvey Scheel; and sister-in-law: Jean Ann Scheel.
Pallbearers include: Sheldon Moos, Kyle Moos, Cory Moos, Rick Alexander, Braxton Alexander, and Luis Jaramillo.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the caregivers: Susie Golla, Elara Hospice, and the love from family and friends during this time.
A Visitation will be held from 5:00PM - 8:00PM, with the Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00PM, on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church of Selma, Texas. The Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00AM on Friday, May 1, 2026 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church of Selma, Texas. Interment to immediately follow at Selma Cemetery #2.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking you to make donations in memory of Arnold “Fred” Moos to OLPH St. Michael’s Society, Bracken Volunteer Fire Department, or a charity of one’s choice.
