Obituary

Andre DeVelle Gholson, a cherished husband, father, and brother, entered eternal rest with the Lord on September 19, 2026. Born in Harvey, Illinois, to James Gholson and Rowena Brill, he leaves behind his wife of 34 years, April Gholson, and their three beloved daughters, Paris, Olivia, and Alana Gholson.

Andre worked as a registered nurse consultant for the Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) Pilot Unit and the En Route Critical Care (ERCC) Pilot Unit at the 59th Medical Wing, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. A U.S. Army veteran, he served from 1988 to 1998 before retiring.

Beyond his medical consulting career, Andre earned widespread recognition as an elite powerlifter. He captured multiple gold medals and titles in competitions, including the USA Powerlifting Military Nationals and the IPF Masters Competition. In 2011, he won gold at both the IPF World Masters Powerlifting Championship and the Masters Nationals.

Andre is a fraternal brother of the Prince Hall Freemasons and Past Master of John T. Maxey Lodge No. 74, F&AM (PHA). Striving to improve himself in Masonry, he was elevated to the rank of Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret 32° at Lone Star Consistory #113, part of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Masons (PHA). Andre also crossed the burning sands and was made a Noble of Moussa Temple No. 106 (AEAONMS) of the Prince Hall Shrine Fraternity. His Masonic travels also took him to York Rite, where he was exalted as a Companion of Shilo Royal Arch Chapter #16, Holy Royal Arch Masons (PHA). Most recently, he was greeted as an Illustrious Companion of William H. Craig Council #4, Royal and Select Masters (PHA). Andre proudly served as Worthy Patron of Gernall Smart Elite Chapter No. 79, Order of the Eastern Stars (PHA). Andre loved cars and was involved in the lowriding community. He and his daughter, Alana, were members of the Rollerz Only Car Club of SATX. A God-fearing man, Andre also served as an usher, nurse, and class leader at Bethel A.M.E. Church.

Andre was preceded in death by his parents, James Gholson and Rowena Brill; his grandparents, Louise D. Jones and Henry Andreson, and James and Inez Gholson; and his brothers-in-law, Jeff Lambert and Curtis Johnson. He is survived by his “plus parents,” Rene Stegall and Gray Brill; his brothers, Ashanti and Dein Gholson; his sister, Kwanza Johnson; his parents-in-law, O’Neil and Marlene Wilder; and his brother-in-law, Aaron Wilder. He also leaves behind his nieces and nephews, Akiri and Ava Gholson, Kaiden Johnson, Layla Gholson, Aaron (AJ), and Jayden Wilder, as well as his aunts and uncles, Jerry Gholson, Lorrain Williams, Liz McFaren, Dell Hodo, Onnie Beard, Bernadine Van, and Evans Wilder.

Andre was a devoted husband and father who took immense pride in supporting his daughters. He attended Paris’ gymnastics meets and Olivia and Alana’s softball tournaments, and he enjoyed lowrider car shows with his beloved “Gholson Girls.” Kindhearted and caring, Andre was always ready to help others in their time of need.
